1The short answer
If you already have art you love, a specialist custom shop gives you the most control: you see a live preview, pick a true dakimakura size, and a person checks your file before it prints. If you want the art itself created for you, a marketplace artist is often the better first stop, and many of their customers bring the finished art to a shop like ours for printing. If you just want a photo on a pillow and do not care about dakimakura sizing, a photo gift site is honestly the cheapest route.
2When a marketplace artist is the better pick
Marketplaces are where individual artists sell. You are paying for their style and their time, and the artwork usually comes included. That is the right choice when the drawing matters more than the printing. Check each listing for the actual pillow size, the fabric, whether printing is one or two sided, and where it ships from, because every seller is different.
3When a photo gift site is enough
Photo gift sites are built for mugs, blankets and photo pillows. If you want a picture of your dog on a cushion, they are quick and cheap. What they usually do not offer: 150 to 180 cm dakimakura sizes, anime-style fabrics like two-way tricot, double-sided printing, or any review of your file's resolution before it prints.
4When you want official licensed art
If you want official art of a licensed character, buy from a licensed retailer. That is the only place official art legitimately comes from. A custom shop is for your own art: commissions you own, original characters, gifts, photos, and fan art you have the rights to print.

Is it better to buy a custom body pillow from Etsy or a specialist shop?
It depends on what you are buying. If you want an artist's style and the drawing made for you, a marketplace artist is a great choice. Why are custom dakimakura more expensive than photo pillows?
Size and printing. A real dakimakura cover is 100 to 180 cm long, printed edge to edge at 300 DPI on specialty fabric, usually on both sides. Photo pillows are small, single-sided cushions on generic fabric. You are not paying a brand premium, you are paying for several times more printed fabric.
Can a custom shop print art of licensed characters?
Official art belongs to the license holder, so official products only come from licensed retailers. Custom shops print art you have the rights to: commissions you own, original characters, your own photos and drawings. If an artist drew a piece for you, the print rights are between you and that artist.
What should I check before ordering from any custom pillow shop?
Five things: true dakimakura sizing, double-sided printing and its cost, a preview before payment, whether a human checks your file resolution, and tracked shipping with an honest delivery estimate. Any good shop will answer all five without hesitation.
